Family Communication

Regular communication with parents and caregivers about the child’s activities, experiences and important information.

A service is more than a time slot

Good respite support starts with understanding how the child experiences the world.

Before care begins, families can share routines, comfort items, favourite activities, dietary needs, allergies, communication preferences and developmental, behavioural or sensory considerations that may be relevant.

Routines

What a typical day looks like and what transitions may need support.

Interests

Activities, play, music, books or other things the child enjoys.

Comfort

What helps the child feel secure, calm and understood.

Expectations

What the parent or caregiver wants the child to experience during care.

Possible activities

Care can include meaningful, age-appropriate experiences.

Activities are discussed with the family and should fit the child, the setting and the agreed care arrangement.

Creative

Arts & crafts

Simple creative activities that support expression, enjoyment and participation.

Sensory

Sensory play

Appropriate sensory activities based on the child’s preferences and needs.

Movement

Outdoor activities

Age-appropriate outdoor play when suitable and agreed with the family.

Quiet time

Reading & music

Calm activities that can support comfort, connection and enjoyment.

Structure

Structured play

Planned activities that offer guidance, routine and opportunities to participate.

Choice

Unstructured play

Space for child-led play, interests and age-appropriate independence.

Individualized support

Care plans should reflect the child, not force the child into a standard template.

Tender Care’s service approach considers interests, routines, strengths, abilities and family expectations so care can be more consistent and meaningful.

Family communication

Parents and caregivers remain part of the care experience.

Relevant updates can help families understand what the child did, how the experience went and whether anything important should be discussed before the next period of care.

Service scope

Specialized support requires the right safeguards.

Some services may involve additional risk, qualifications, permissions or regulatory responsibilities.

Personal care

Personal care should only be offered when the appropriate training, permissions, insurance and any applicable regulatory requirements are in place.

Transportation

Transportation should only be provided when appropriate authorization, insurance, safety arrangements and any applicable requirements are in place.

Medication

Medication-related support should only be offered with the appropriate training, permissions, procedures and safeguards.

Complex medical needs

Children with complex medical needs should only be supported where Tender Care is appropriately trained, equipped, insured and permitted to provide the required care.

Other specialized supports

Families should discuss specialized needs in advance so suitability can be considered before care is scheduled.

Discuss your family’s needs

The right service starts with the right conversation.
